The first Celebrex lawsuit was filed in the United States against the drug's
maker Pfizer on December 29, 2004. This Celebrex lawsuit was filed in Illinois
as a possible class action suit for patients taking Celebrex who have not suffered
physical injury. The plaintiffs claim that the manufacturer, Pfizer, negligently
marketed Celebrex despite the fact that side effects were so severe that no
reasonable pharmaceutical company would have continued to market this drug.
This particular Celebrex lawsuit refers to risks discovered in a recent clinical
trial suggesting that patients taking Celebrex are more at risk of suffering
serious cardiovascular side effects caused by Celebrex use. The National Cancer
Institute designed a study to measure the effectiveness of Celebrex use in preventing
colorectal and other cancers. The clinical trial was suspended after research
indicated that patients taking 400 milligram doses of Celebrex were 2.5 times
more likely to suffer heart attack or stroke, and patients taking 800 milligrams
were 3.4 times more likely to suffer adverse cardiovascular events as compared
to the control group.
The Wall Street Journal published an article about ten deaths that have been
linked to Celebrex use right after the drug was approved. Gastrointestinal bleeding
was the cause of death in half of these cases. Two of these deaths were caused
by heart attack, one for kidney failure, one for drug interaction complications,
and the last cause of death was unknown.
Pfizer denied any potential link and insisted that Celebrex use was safe and
they did not take any further measures to assess these potential risks in order
to protect patients from potentially deadly side effects. They have however
stated that they plan to investigate the nature and extent of these risks but
have not pulled Celebrex off the market.
Other suits similar to this Celebrex lawsuit have been filed against Pfizer
in Canada and other parts of the world. Legal experts are expecting a number
of Celebrex lawsuit claims to be filed against the makers of Celebrex because
of all the serious side effects associated with this prescription medication.
